Bubba (Bob) himself

Bubba's
Place

Hi, My name is Robert, but some of my friends call me Bubba. I am proud to be a geek! I like to play on Windows machines (mostly NT and 2000), Macs of most types, and I have a Sparc20 to play with Solaris on. I'm a member of the USENET Cabal, and I can be found lurking on several news groups. My favorites are:
  • alt.tech-Support.recovery
  • alt.folklore.urban
  • alt.fan.warlord
You can always get my latest news on my Blog on LiveJournal.

The fact is, I've known I was a geek since I was a kid. I don't know how many plugs I shorted out at my parent's house before I quit playing with electricity. It's a wonder I didn't kill myself. I also had an uncle who worked at the Navy Arctic Research Laboratory at Point Barrow, Alaska. On one of his trips down here to defrost, he brought me a box of what any sane mind would call junk. To a kid with The Knack, however, it was a veritable treasure chest. There was an old radio microphone, a pair of old military headphones, a resistor substitution box with a blown resistor, and other things of that ilk. After that, there was no turning back. So it should be no surprise that I was first licensed as an Amateur Radio Operator with a Novice Class License while I was still in Junior High School. Back then my callsign was WB7VGX. I drifted away in college, but I'm back now. My callsign is W7EG and I have an Amateur Extra Class License.

I'm a member of the American Radio Relay League and I am an active member of the Radio Club of Tacoma, so you might also hear me from the club station W7DK.

We were involved in the 2003 VHF Sweepstakes this January. We were doing the contest as more of an operating party, so we were not really all that competative. I'll update this with the official score when it is out, but I think we scored just over 2,000 points. I have some photos of the contest here.

I'm also a big fan of science fiction. Books, movies, and Television. Yes, I'm a Trekkie, but I'm also a major Farscape fan and I like Andromeda and classics like The Outer Limits, as well. I have several friends who are published science fiction authors, and I usually have a back-log of their books to read. I also know a lot of other SF fans because I go to several science fiction conventions a year. In fact, I just was at WesterCon56 over 4th of July weekend. I brought my digital camera, so I have some photos from the Con here. Let me know what you think of them.

Currently in my reading queue are:
  1. The Joy of Linux: A Gourmet Guide to Open Source
by Michael Hall and Brian Proffitt
  2. Burn Rate
    by Michael Wolff
  3. Murphy's Gambit
